New year, new space!

Pacific Academy of Homeopathy would like to support our alumni in building their clinical practices by offering professional,
affordable clinic space to rent!

And, yes, we'll help you find a practitioner
to share a particular time slot.
(See below for more details about this.)


As many of you know, Karen Allen, our director, has visions of a clinical training program for Pacific Academy. To that effect, we have converted what used to be the 'front office' into a bright and lovely, private room. And we are going to begin renting it out!

So whether you are just starting out and need a professional space to see clients or perhaps you have a practice in the East/North/South Bay but want a place in the city, then read on, and consider becoming part of our Noe Valley Homeopathy Clinic community!

Cost: $25/half day (mornings are 9-1; afternoons are 1:15-5:15pm)

Days available: M-Th

Commitment: at least one half day per week for a minimum of 3 months. If you'd like to share a half day with another practitioner, let us know! And if anyone would like to share Thursday afternoons with PAH grad, Beth Murray, let us (or her) know!

Payment: by credit card, on 1st of each month

Additional Info:

• Access/use of the school homeopathic dispensary - remedies are $10 per vial, to be paid by cash or check to the school at the time the remedy is logged / taken from the remedy cabinet.

• Practitioners will use the office when the clinic is open; they will not have a key allowing them access outside of these hours. Your office has a small space to store your items, a telephone for local calls, and a printer (for client receipts, instructions, etc) that you can use with your laptop.

• Google Calendar will be used to keep track of who has time in the office, and practitioners using the office can arrange between themselves to swap appointment times as agreeable to each other.  A pair of practitioners can sign up for an office rental to share between themselves.

Also, for those of you who haven't been by recently, our waiting room has been spruced up quite a bit with new artwork, window treatments, etc.

As you might know,  I am embarking on a new film.  It is one of the most fascinating stories I have stumbled across in my filmmaking career.

I am following a family with an autistic son, Lucas, who is slowly improving with the use of homeopathy.
A compelling dramatic journey unfolding daily. But this film will go beyond autism-- it explains what homeopathy is, the history,  the controversy, and how it is used to treat a variety of chronic --seemingly incurable --diseases. Ultimately, the film illuminates the connection between emotions and illness, mind and body. 

I am deeply passionate about this film.  In our present health care crisis, homeopathy provides an inexpensive alternative that people need to know about.  While my former films Twitch and Shout, The Jew in the Lotus, Twisted, and Touched helped raise awareness and changed attitudes, this film will not only educate. but could potentially save lives.

of Childhood Behavioral Problems

During this weekend seminar, Tim will use cured cases to teach effective homeopathic treatment of a variety of common behavioral problems in children such as violence, nightmares, night terrors,tantrums, sibling jealousy, ADD/ADHD and Oppositional Defiance Disorder.

You are invited to join your colleagues and fellow students for an excellent weekend of training: great topic, great material, great instructor! Every homeopath needs skills to work with troubled children, and Tim Shannon, ND, brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to this in-depth, case-based class he has prepared for Pacific Academy students. This is the first time for Bay area students to hear Tim teach - don't miss it!

The homeopathic family paradigm will be used as a starting point for working with common pediatric problems - violence, night terrors, tantrums, ADD/ADHD, oppositional behavior, etc. For those of you who have not studied materia medica in this way before, this involves the grouping and differentiation of remedies that have similar presentations into families with characteristic patterns and issues.

Tim has studied extensively with Massimo Mangialavori, and will be teaching from the context of Massimo's work in family based systems of materia medica. He will share with you the advantages and limitations of working with remedies in family systems, and teach through the use of cases to provide materia medica knowledge that is alive, relevant, and applicable for your cases that you will see in your practice in future.
 
Join us to learn about working with difficult pediatric cases:

•  Case Taking: Interviewing children alone, parents alone, or the child and parents together

• Important prescribing points for children with behavioral problems

• Strategies for building rapport with patients

• Utility and limits of skype, phone, and in person consulting with patients

• Repertory strategies for these types of cases
  Baselining and analyzing outcomes

• Posology options - choices in liquid (LM's and low potencies) and dry dosing

• Moving from a "Close" remedy to the simillimum

Format of the class:

The best method to help you learn and refine the clinical skills needed in practice is to interact with cases as if they were your own.  We'll use cases as our focus. After reading through each case,  we'll analyze it, discussing the important features of the case.  Following repertorization, we'll look at the differential and then talk about the successful prescription. Finally,  we'll review  materia medica of each remedy and their analogues.

Bio:

Tim Shannon, ND is a licensed Naturopathic Physician in private practice in Portland Oregon. He serves as an adjunct faculty at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland. He specializes in the treatment of a wide range of mental health complaints using classical homeopathic medicine.  Some of the conditions include: Autistic spectrum, ADHD, OCD, ODD, Tourette's Syndrome, Depression, Anxiety, Eating disorders, Self harm, PTSD, Bi Polar, Cyclothymia & Schizophrenia. He lectures both at the Naturopathic College as well as to the local community on a variety of mental health complaints. He publishes case studies regularly as well as uses videos to illustrate and teach good patient care.

His training included a four-year internship at Portland Alternative Health Center (PAHC) in Downtown Portland. The clinic focuses on dual diagnosis patients and the wide variety of pathology that is common to clinics serving the indigent and low-income population. In addition, he also completed a two-year internship at "Homestreet" - an outpatient mental health facility for the chronically mentally ill.

In the summer of 2000, he was invited to help establish an AIDS clinic in a slum in Nairobi, Kenya. The clinic was designed to treat AIDS patients lacking health care. He also trained local Kenyans in the use of homeopathic medicine at the clinic. He taught at the clinic through formal lecture and by establishing a preceptorship for students who also served as translators.

Tim also taught several classes while a student at the Naturopathic College. They were called "Case to Cure" and were focused on using successful case studies  to enhance clinical training. The classes were based on an in-depth analysis of his successful case studies.

In 1998, he attended his first seminar with Dr. Massimo Mangialavori on eating disorders. He has attended most of Massimo's classes in the US since then. He has also been influenced by a variety of contemporary and old-time homeopaths. In 2007, Massimo invited him to come to Europe to teach.

Prior to becoming a Naturopathic Physician, Dr. Shannon worked for 5 years in several local children's agencies as a counselor working with disturbed and neglected children.
